The current crisis in Sudan has alerted SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL, especially with the massive refugees’ arrival from Ethiopia. We have decided to go back on the field as it is where everything happens and where we are needed the most. Our objective? Provide water, sewerage, and hygiene solutions for refugees and locals living in the Gedaref state as soon as possible as it is a matter of survival.
THROWBACK…
SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL was in the Darfur region, Sudan, from 2004 to 2009. Our teams contributed to the water supply, sewerage, food security, and management of internally displaced persons in the country. This way, we were able to provide the population with food, essential goods, building supplies, and agricultural implements.
ALARMING FIGURES AND WORSENING OF THE CRISIS
In the last five years, the number of people needing humanitarian help in Sudan went from 5.4 million in 2015 to 12.7 million in 2021.
The crisis has started to escalate since November 4th, 2020. The Tigray region in Ethiopia is the battleground between Addis-Ababa government forces and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front forces. Those hostilities have a dramatic impact on the population. Between November 4th and December 14th, the UNHCR and the Commission for Refugees Sudan have registered the arrival of 50.339 refugees coming from Ethiopia.
Climate change and the economic crisis have also aggravated the already difficult conditions for Sudanese people. Essential goods prices soared (food, medicines) which resulted in more food insecurity.
Within this tense framework, SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL has conducted a first fact-finding mission in Khartum, Sudan in March 2020. The objective was to evaluate the humanitarian situation, but because of the Covid-19 epidemic and the closure of borders, the mission had to be cut short.
On November 24th, 2020, a refugees’ emergency response plan has been established. After a risk analysis, it has been estimated that the refugees’ population will reach 100.000 within the next six months, but it could attain up to 200.000 people in the worst-case scenario.
OUR ACTIONS ON THE FIELD
The purpose of SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL’s teams on the field is to help the refugees’ camp in the Gedaref state get access to water.
Our missions are:
- to increase the water quantity available for each person per day by bringing water by truck transport.
- build sanitarian infrastructures providing safety and dignity to relocated refugees.
- distribute hygiene kits.
- Advocate for hygiene standards, especially during the Covid-19 epidemic. This is even more important in areas prone to water-borne disease outbreaks.
Those actions are crucial as they are helping people regain their dignity.
WHAT’S NEXT?
SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL is going to analyze the population’s needs for people living around the Gedaref region. The goal is to better understand food insecurity by reaching out to the communities. Humanitarian needs are crucial in a country seriously affected by a sanitary and economic crisis as well as climate change. Our help is needed in Sudan, lives are at stake there.
