Irak : Our teams mobilized to provide Mosul populations with water

Published on Wednesday 17 May 2017

After building a water treatment station along the Tigris River in partnership with Oxfam and the Norwegian Refugee Council, our teams are among the first to provide for people’s needs with water-trucking in West Mosul, close to the front line.

Water systems destroyed, contaminated sources, reliance on rainwater… West Mosul inhabitants severely lack access to drinking water. As summer is getting closer and temperatures are increasing until they reach 40°C, SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL, provides daily water to its partners working in west Mosul thanks to its water treatment station. “For a few weeks, our teams have been working on the construction of a water treatment station along the Tigris River. Every day, we supply enough water to provide about 10 litres to 30,000 people, explains Guillaume Woehling, Head of Mission for SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL in Iraq. ”

Water distribution in West Mosul neighbourhoods

A new step has been taken in the last few days. After several attempts and long negotiations with local authorities, our teams managed to enter West Mosul neighbourhoods. They distribute 120,000 litres of drinking water per day, with the support of the French Foreign Ministry’s Crisis and Support Centre. “It was a vital need for populations who have had very little access to water and even less to drinking water since the beginning of the offensive on the city. On a daily basis, we fill about 20 water tanks located in Wadi Hajar neighbourhood, from which populations help themselves. Beyond quenching thirst, the return of drinking water in West Mosul will help contain outbreaks caused by insalubrity that threaten especially children.
