Haiti: mission accomplished in Christ Roi

In the few hours following the earthquake in Haiti on 12th January 2010, SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL took action to overcome the needs for reconstruction. In January 2013 started the urban planning project and the economic development in Christ Roi neighbourhood (Port-au-Prince) to follow-up post earthquake activities. This project lasted for four and a half years.

The « Remanbre Kriswa » project, supported by the European Union, improved the living conditions of 20,000 people in the Christ Roi district and provided 66 families with safer and better furnished homes. Our teams secured the Nicolas ravine on more than 500 metres and rebuilt public spaces.

As soon as SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL arrived in Haiti in 2010, teams set up clearance activities and rehabilitation of water facilities to allow people to come back to Christ Roi in sustainable living conditions. To face the complexity of the urban setting, and the lack of urban environment management highlighted by a 2010 study, the organization decided to set up a land use, housing and sanitary plan. This plan was developed in collaboration between the European Union, technical partners (SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL, Entrepreneurs du Monde, le Gret and Build Change) and public institutions (particularly Port-au-Prince City Hall and the Public Works Ministry).

The good communication with local communities helped with the project’s success. SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL kept the beneficiaries updated about the improvement of the project so they would feel more involved.

This project allow 218 families to have access to sanitation facilities

SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL, in charge of the global project management, helped the institutions and communities and contributed to sanitation and facilities rehabilitation. The partners Entrepreneurs du Monde, le Gret and Build Change targeted housing and district economic development.

On the ground, SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL had to face land challenges that, if they led to delays in project development, did not stop the reconstruction. The closing ceremony of this widespread project took place the 31st of August.
