2.3 billion people have no toilet

Published on Friday 17 November 2017

2.3 billion people have no toilet and 892 million defecate in the open air. Fearing for their safety, they have to walk, hide, wait until night to defecate. Lack of access to toilet has serious health consequences.

Approximately 375,000 tonnes of faeces are released into the wild each year. A single gram contains up to 10 million viruses and 1 million bacteria causing polio, dysentery, and cholera.

Proper latrines prevent contamination of springs and water tables and reduce diarrhoeal diseases by one third.
Since 1980, SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL has been building latrines in the most complex situations to help vulnerable populations.
