[Paris, 27 February 2025] During the night of 26 to 27 February, the NGO SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL received an order from USAID to permanently end the majority of its programs funded by the United States.
Following the announcement by the US government on Wednesday, February 26, of a 92% reduction in its foreign aid program funding, SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL received letters from USAID on the night of February 26 to 27 terminating its contracts, signaling the end of our US-funded operations, including those related to vital humanitarian aid, which had previously been exempted from the funding freeze. At this time, humanitarian projects in six countries out of the 25 we operate in are affected: Mozambique, Niger, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen. We fear that further contract terminations may occur in the coming hours.
“This abrupt stop goes against all commitments made, including the continuation of vital assistance projects promised by the US Secretary of State,” says Kevin Goldberg, CEO of SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL. “US funding has allowed us to provide essential emergency aid, such as access to water, food, and shelter. Over 2 million people will see this vital aid come to an end starting today.”
The United States has until now been by far the largest global donor in humanitarian aid. In 2024, it contributed over 42% of global humanitarian aid. Thanks to this support, thousands of NGOs, both local and international, save lives and assist millions of people every year worldwide. In Sudan, in the Darfur region, where we have relentlessly raised alarms about the insufficient humanitarian aid since the conflict resumed in 2023, nearly 650,000 displaced people will be deprived of access to water and sanitation once our activities are halted. These shocking decisions will lead to the loss of human lives, both today and in the future.
The NGO SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL assists populations affected by conflicts and violence, epidemics, natural or climate-related disasters and economic collapse. Our humanitarian teams are committed to helping people whose lives, health and security are threatened, by meeting their most vital needs: food, water and shelter.
