Statement of Commitment on Climate and the Environment by Organisations engaged in International Solidarity

Published on Monday 19 January 2026

[January 19, 2026] The climate and environmental emergency is a global emergency. It is already affecting all people and ecosystems, but the most vulnerable people, who have contributed the least to these disruptions, are the hardest hit. Without a drastic reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, without ambitious measures to preserve and restore ecosystems, and without reducing vulnerabilities, these crises will continue to have a major impact on humanitarian needs and the chances of vulnerable populations to sustainably improve their living conditions.

Organisations engaged in international solidarity must therefore adapt their mode of action in order
to respond to these crises and support populations to be more resilient, to prepare for and adapt to
this new reality, and to preserve and conserve their environment.

The actions of organisations engaged in international solidarity, crucial as they may be, can
nevertheless generate environmental and climate impacts. Therefore, for the humanitarian sector,
taking these issues into account is a question of overall coherence of action, exemplarity and respect
for the principle of “do no harm”.

In order to be aligned with international climate commitments, while taking into account the
principle of “common but differentiated responsibilities and respective capabilities”, a legal principle
at the heart of international environmental law and a foundation of environmental and social justice,
we, organisations engaged in international solidarity, commit¹ to :

1. MEASURING OUR IMPACTS

● Measure the environmental and carbon impacts of our actions on a regular and systemic basis, in order to develop a comprehensive understanding of our impacts.

2. REDUCING OUR ENVIRONMENTAL AND CARBON FOOTPRINT

● Halve² our operational emissions³ by 2030, relative to our levels of activity.

● Implement good practices aimed at reducing the environmental footprint associated with goods and services directly provided to populations, provided that these practices are beneficial to, and accepted by, the populations concerned.

3. ADAPTING OUR ACTIONS TO THESE NEW CHALLENGES

● Integrate an analysis of climate and environmental risks into all our actions and promote the implementation of prevention, anticipation, and adaptation measures within projects when relevant.

● Transform our operating methods in response to current and future challenges generated by climate change and environmental degradation in order to maintain our operational capacities.

● Develop and call upon local expertise in connection with Grand Bargain’s commitments on localization.

4. COMMUNICATING

● Share our environmental results and progress transparently on an annual basis, in order to strengthen accountability and collective engagement.

5. RAISING AWARENESS AND ACTING COLLECTIVELY

● Raise awareness internally and externally about environmental and climate issues and about possible measures to address them.

● Work, as much as possible, in a collaborative and pooled manner, including beyond the humanitarian sector.

¹ The success of such a commitment requires the involvement of donors and States in order to foster systemic transformations that enable the reduction of certain emissions and to support the necessary technical and financial adjustments. We will remain attentive to the involvement of our partners and to the co-construction of strategies and actions to be implemented.

² In accordance with recognized methodologies, voluntary carbon offsetting can only take place after emission reduction efforts have been implemented.
