Myanmar earthquakes: the urgent need to respond to the distress and challenges faced by affected populations

Published on Tuesday 1 April 2025

[Paris, April 1, 2025] A powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake, followed by a violent aftershock, struck central Myanmar on Friday March 28. In response, authorities have declared a state of emergency in six regions. SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL is already mobilizing to provide a swift response to assist those affected.

Myanmar (or Burma), located in Southeast Asia, was struck by a powerfull 7.7-magnitude earthquake, followed by a violent aftershock just ten minutes later. The country’s second-largest city, Mandalay, home to over 1 million people, was particularly affected. The tremors, felt as far away as Thailand, caused widespread damage and sent some of the population into distress. According to Myanmar’s state media, the latest death toll stands at 2,052, with 3,900 injured and 270 missing. In an unusual move, the country has appealed for international humanitarian assistance.

Six regions in Myanmar have been placed under a state of emergency, as well as the Thai capital, Bangkok, where the tremors were also felt. SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL’s teams based in Yangon and at various operational bases in the region are safe, though in shock, and are already mobilizing to provide an emergency humanitarian response.

“We are doing everything we can to ensure aid reaches the most affected areas and to address the immediate needs of displaced populations, including food, water, shelter, and sanitation,” said Quentin Rouveirolles, Myanmar Country Director at SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL. “In a coordinated effort, we are actively verifying and analyzing the information  that is gradually reaching us, in order to ensure rapid and effective emergency aid.”

Time is running out, the needs seem considerable, and our teams are mobilizing to respond as quickly as possible. In light of this devastating natural disaster, SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL is launching a donation appeal to support those affected: Donate to SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL – Humanitarian missions
