[Paris, 2nd of July 2026] One week after the powerful earthquakes which struck Venezuela, SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL is launching its first emergency response operations in the state of La Guaira. The NGO’s teams are addressing the most critical needs for water, hygiene and sanitation amongst displaced communities, whilst thousands of people remain without drinking water, electricity or means of communication.
More than 2,295 people have lost their lives, over 11,000 have been injured, and thousands of families have been forced to leave their homes due to fears posed by aftershocks and the dangers posed by damaged or destroyed buildings.
In La Guaira, one of the worst-affected areas, assessments carried out by SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL reveal extensive damage to homes and essential infrastructure. “The situation is critical. The affected communities are in urgent need of drinking water, electricity, food and sanitation facilities, such as showers and toilets,” declares Alain Coutand, Regional Director for SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL.
The NGO’s teams have already been able to carry out initial distributions of hygiene kits containing soap, sanitary products, hand sanitizer, nappies and other essential items. They have also begun supplying water via water tankers and distributing bottles of water. Over the coming days, the NGO plans to provide drinking water to health centers, relief centers, and temporary accommodation. Initial assessments highlight a high risk of waterborne diseases and deteriorating hygiene conditions, while local medical services are under severe strain.
“Access to water is now one of the top priorities in preventing the health crisis from worsening and protecting the most vulnerable groups,” adds Alain Coutand.
While Venezuela was already facing a major economic and humanitarian crisis, the earthquakes on 24 June have significantly exacerbated the needs of the population. SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL, which has been working in the country since 2019 and specializes in emergency response, is continuing its efforts to support the most vulnerable communities.
