DRC: Ebola epidemic, an emergency declared

Published on Tuesday 19 May 2026

[Paris, 19 May 2026] On Sunday 17 May, the WHO declared an international public health emergency in response to the spread of the Ebola epidemic in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), which has already caused over 90 suspected deaths. The SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL teams stand ready to respond to the needs of the affected populations.

In eastern DRC, Ituri province is facing a significant resurgence of the Ebola virus. The epidemic, which was officially declared on 15 May, is caused by the Bundibugyo variant, a rare and lethal strain of the virus for which no vaccine exists.

The absolute priority is to ensure the safety of our teams and to contribute to the fight against the epidemic, particularly through community awareness and protection”, says Federica Badocco, Country Director at SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL.

In order to be operational as quickly as possible, SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL is implementing prevention and protection measures within its premises and across its activities, as well as distributing personal protective equipment and prevention kits, essential for teams to be able to continue to deliver aid and to sustain our humanitarian assistance.

The humanitarian community is mobilizing and SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL is actively taking part in coordination efforts to guarantee a response tailored to the needs of the population” adds Federic, who is currently in Ituri.

During a visit to Bunia on the 17 May, the national Minister of Public Health, Roger Kamba, reported 350 suspected cases and 91 likely deaths, mainly in the health zones of Bunia, Rwampara et Mongbwalu. Two cases have also been recorded in Kampala, the Ugandan capital. In the Far North Kivu, one case has also been confirmed.

The following days will be decisive – this is only the beginning of the epidemic. Reaching the most affected populations will be a challenge, and it will be essential to adapt our response to the concerns of local communities”, explains Justine Muzik Piquemal, Regional Director at SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL.

SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL has been present in the DRC since 2000, and notably contributed to the response to the previous Ebola outbreak in the country between 2018 and 2020: Ebola in DRC: one year after the first cases, our teams mobilized.
