Water is a vital need for everyone. It allows for the development of agricultural activities and irrigation, thus reinforcing the food security of populations.

Access to drinking water can also have serious health implications. The use of clean latrines, for example, protects against epidemics. These very dangerous water-borne diseases, such as diarrhea, cholera, malaria and typhoid fever, are the cause of death for several million people each year. These diseases represent the first cause of death in the world.

Beyond health and food security, water is also of great use for the preservation of the environment. Indeed, it allows us to treat wastewater, drain rainwater, and manage solid waste.

Finally, access to water, sanitation and hygiene also has an impact on education. Indeed, when schools do not have safe and clean facilities, many girls, especially during their menstrual periods, miss school and therefore part of their education.

Faced with all the consequences that lack of water and lack of access to sanitation and hygiene services can entail, SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL is involved in the field through multiple programs. In regions affected by conflict, epidemics or natural or climatic disasters, teams bring vital and central access to affected populations.

Water points are rehabilitated or built to allow everyone to collect water. Many communities also benefit from the installation of latrines, allowing privacy and reducing the risk of epidemics.

In addition to these infrastructures, the populations are accompanied by awareness sessions. The objective is to teach good practices. Community management committees have also been set up to ensure the long-term preservation of this essential resource for men, women and children.
