In Nigeria, since 2009, the abuses of the armed terrorist group Boko Haram in Borno State have caused massive population displacement.

Today, the majority of these displaced people live in camps in the main cities of Nigeria. As return is not an option, these populations are forced to stay in camps with limited resources.

In addition to inadequate access to water, sanitation and hygiene, and health care, there is alarming food insecurity, which creates a high vulnerability to outbreaks of water-related diseases, such as cholera, which remains endemic in the region. In order to meet their basic needs, populations are highly dependent on humanitarian aid.

To support populations and their urgent needs, SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL is developing a comprehensive response: provision of water, sanitation, hygiene, food security, shelter and a response to epidemics.

In coordination with health actors, SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL fights against malnutrition and recurrent epidemics and water-related diseases, such as cholera. In order to deal with this disease and to stop the peaks of epidemics, a rapid response including the chlorination of water points, disinfection of homes and the distribution of “cholera kits” is implemented.

In parallel to this emergency response, numerous activities are being carried out to work on the longer term. SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL teams are developing, for example, projects to revive people’s livelihoods. Sustainable infrastructures that were insufficient or non-functional are also built and rehabilitated. In addition, boreholes are built and solar generators and equipment are installed to ensure sustainable access to drinking water and to provide long-term support to populations in need.
