Haiti is facing many health, climatic, economic and social crises since the devastating earthquake of 2010.

Between droughts, earthquakes and hurricanes, several epidemics have spread in the country: malaria, but especially cholera, which has affected several hundred thousand people. The populations are continuously affected and their living conditions have deteriorated dramatically. Their livelihoods are particularly worrying, as well as their access to basic services such as water, sanitation and hygiene.

SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL intervened in Haiti in 2010, following the development of a serious cholera epidemic. To avoid the risk of spreading, numerous sanitation and water supply facilities were installed in the country. Homes were equipped, but also schools and health centers. To complement these operations, several hygiene awareness campaigns have been conducted among the population. Infrastructure management committees involving the local community have also been developed.

In terms of food security, SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL is developing an approach that aims to cover the needs of the most vulnerable populations while strengthening their capacity for resilience. The teams stimulate the local market to help malnourished people feed themselves, but also encourage economic exchanges and revive agriculture and livestock in the region.

SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL is committed to building a long-term response. Teams are constantly working with local communities on climate risk management, thus preparing them for emergency situations. The structure of the shelters is also improved to better protect the inhabitants. Finally, to compensate for the inadequacy of state structures, SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL is helping to strengthen governance and institutions in the water, sanitation and hygiene sector.
