In the Democratic Republic of Congo, chronic conflicts occur because of the diversity and wealth of resources in some regions.
Conflicts between armed groups and intercommunal violence persist in the country. People are continually forced to flee their homes to another region or neighboring country.
Conflicts between armed groups, poor infrastructure, and disastrous weather conditions severely restrict economic and agricultural activities in rural areas. The consequences for populations already suffering from displacement are catastrophic, particularly in terms of food.
In addition, the Democratic Republic of Congo is facing several very serious epidemics. This deplorable sanitary situation is caused by unsafe hygiene practices and the lack of drinking water supply. The failure of the health system means that several million Congolese live in sanitary conditions far below the standards imposed by international humanitarian law.
SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL intervenes in the areas where the majority of cholera cases occur in the country. Teams provide resources and training to communities so that they can build their own latrines. Awareness-raising campaigns are also conducted to bring about long-term behavioral change. In addition, SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL teams disinfect and rehabilitate water points to reduce the risk of an epidemic outbreak.
Finally, the local market is boosted and the populations empowered thanks to a home chlorination program, using chlorine solutions produced by local entrepreneurs.
