Central African Republic

The Central African Republic has been particularly unstable since 2013. Strong tensions persist between the ex-Seleka and anti-Balaka armed groups.

Because of the insecurity, hundreds of thousands of people have been displaced or have moved to a border country. In these areas, migration flows are causing heavy tensions between the different communities. This disrupts commercial and agricultural activities and provokes new population displacements, which in turn have serious repercussions on food access and availability. The country’s food and nutritional insecurity is in a critical state.

This global crisis is impacting preventive health activities, health care, and rapid response capabilities in the event of an epidemic. Infrastructures, such as hospitals and health centers, have been weakened.

SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL is working in the Central African Republic to rehabilitate water and sanitation infrastructures. Families are supplied with drinking water and water management committees are set up to ensure the sustainability of the facilities and shared power. The teams also conduct awareness campaigns on the use of water points and good hygiene practices.

Farmers are also supported by SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL teams who repair some of the defective boreholes and transport the water to their land. Farmers and their products are protected, which guarantees the food security of the regional population.

In order to facilitate commercial, agricultural and pastoral activities and thus increase access to food and revive the market, community service projects are also carried out. SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL provides training to farmers and herders after supplying them with seed and tool kits.

In addition to this work, SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL teams have developed emergency response mechanisms in the event of a natural or climatic disaster in the country.
