Sri Lanka

From 2005 to 2007

Context

On 24 December 2004, a quake in the Indian Ocean off the Sumatran coast resulted in a tsunami that hit Sri Lanka 2 hours and 17 minutes later, devastating almost 800km of coastline and claiming some 31,000 lives.

Our action

SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL’s teams were dispatched to the island to help those affected by the disaster. In January 2005, an operation was launched to respond to the most urgent needs, such as access to drinking water and sanitation. Secondly, clean-up schemes and rebuilding programs were carried out until 2007, along with efforts to revive fishing-related activities.
