Context

Since October 2023, hostilities have resulted in significant civilian casualties and the humanitarian situation in Palestine is extremely alarming: more than 3.6 million people need humanitarian aid to survive in Gaza, as do 1.52 million people in the West Bank.

Furthermore, 81% of all infrastructure and 92% of housing has been damaged or destroyed, leaving an estimated 1.5 million people in urgent need of shelter. Over 77% of roads have been damaged, and 60 million tonnes of debris are blocking urban areas.

Access to basic services in the Gaza Strip – and the West Bank – is extremely limited. 80% of water, hygiene and sanitation (WAHS) infrastructure has been destroyed, forcing one million people to live on less than six litres of drinking water per day – far below the humanitarian minimum. Non-functional sanitation systems expose people to contaminated water and increase the risk of epidemics, while most health facilities are either non-functional or overwhelmed.

Added to this already tragic situation, the famine ravaging several areas of the Gaza Strip. Agricultural production, fisheries, markets, and livelihoods have been largely destroyed, forcing heavy dependence on food assistance and cash support.

In the West Bank, people’s ability to meet their needs is being compromised by land confiscation, restricted access to markets and a struggling economy. This further weakens an already vulnerable population.

SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL has operated continuously in Gaza since early 2024 and delivering uninterrupted life-saving assistance.

After the destruction of its office in Rafah, SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL established operations in Deir al-Balah. This footprint has enabled the NGO to operate across the Middle Area and Southern and Northern governorates.

The team of the NGO adapts its activities to population movements and evolving needs, in informal and organized sites, focusing on hard-to-reach communities.

SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL’s interventions is focused on emergency WASH, including safe water production and supply, sanitation activities and hygiene kit distribution. At the same time, the NGO is carrying out food security activities, including food distribution and support for home gardening, and providing shelter kits.

In the West Bank, SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL and its partner MA’AN Development Center implement a WASH emergency response through a Rapid Response Mechanism, targeting internally displaced populations. Interventions are triggered by alerts to which SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL and MA’AN respond based on needs and operational capacities.

By 2026, the NGO intends to continue providing emergency assistance in the form of water, hygiene and sanitation services, as well as food aid and shelter, in both the Gaza Strip and the West Bank. This will involve addressing immediate needs while continuing reconstruction efforts.
