March 14, 2019. Accompanied by strong winds and heavy rains, Cyclone Idai struck Beira, Mozambique’s second largest city and its half a million inhabitants. Nearly a thousand dead and hundreds of thousands homeless, Idai drowned everything in its path, and paved the way open for a cholera epidemic
Mobilized in the first days of the disaster, SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL’s emergency team deployed to Mozambique with drinking water supply equipment, shelter kits and hygiene kits to provide some 10,000 people with access to clean water, protection from the elements and cholera. The installation of drinking water treatment units and the distribution of these basic kits made it possible to rapidly improve the living conditions of the surviving families and to fight water-borne diseases.
