Context
In 2022, the Afghan population were suffering from the combined effects of international sanctions, a dysfunctional national banking system, and the consequences of 20 years of conflict, as well as several years of drought and natural disasters.
As a result of international funding cuts, inflation and difficulties in obtaining cash, the population’s usual coping mechanisms were no longer sufficient, and the country was on the brink of an even more severe humanitarian crisis.
According to United Nations estimates, 20 million people — over half the population — were faced with food insecurity in 2023. In 2022, 79% of households did not have enough water for drinking, cooking, bathing and washing.

During 2022, SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL provided support for over 30.000 people in the most remote areas of Afghanistan, who had not received any assistance for decades. Our teams provided short-term assistance in response to natural disasters affecting the country, and long-term support to improve the resilience of rural populations. In 2023, SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL is planning to increase its reach by supporting approximately 146.500 individuals.
SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL also worked with communities to increase access to drinking water and expand their agricultural capacity. In addition, our organization launched operations in Nimroz and Farah provinces during 2022; these provinces are some of the most remote in the country, with very little access to aid.
