Haiti: Give the water back to its population

Hurricane Matthew in 2016 severely affected living conditions in southern Haiti, exposing people to the risks of outbreaks.

Thanks to a strong presence in the area, SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL teams were able to deploy quickly to respond urgently to Matthew’s consequences (kit distributions, water chlorination point installations, water trucking) and make a rapid needs assessment in order to offer an appropriate response.

A year after the disaster, the intervention has enabled the rehabilitation of several water networks and a boost in their management by the communities themselves. Nearly 30,000 affected people have benefited from these actions.

A VITAL CHALLENGE

Since 2010, SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL has strengthened Haitian local authorities’ water management capacities and rehabilitated networks to improve communities’ access to drinking water.

In a country that is regularly affected by natural disasters, the lack of infrastructure exposes people to waterborne diseases, including cholera. Access to basic water, sanitation and hygiene services is therefore a vital issue.
SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL has been able to respond with the support of the Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance (OFDA), the European Union, Unicef, l’Agence de l’Eau Seine-Normandie and other water agencies and French partners.
