SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL is taking part in the international symposium “Feeding Cities, Urban Agriculture, a solution to increase the resilience of African cities”, from 23 to 25 March at the French Institute in Antananarivo (Madagascar). It is organized by the Urban Jobs Institute (Institut des Métiers de la Ville).
Food insecurity is a recurrent phenomenon in urban areas in many countries. It is difficult for people in the most disadvantaged urban areas to buy fresh produce, including vegetables, fruit, meat, eggs from far away and often sold at high prices. Beyond improving food diversity, urban agriculture leads to positive dynamics by creating employment, fostering social cohesion, etc.
The discussion initiated at the conference on urban agriculture organised in Paris by SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL on January the 26th, in collaboration with AgroParisTech, continues in the southern hemisphere. This conference will allow actors from Burkina Faso, France, Madagascar, the Netherlands and Senegal to review their experiences. Julie Mayans, Food Security Expert at SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL, will present the sack farming projects in Kenya and Myanmar to share the benefits and challenges of the project. This vertical farming technique especially adapted to small areas and where access to water and land is limited, offers a wide range of opportunities for non-governmental organizations and other actors in global food security.
