Yemen: humanitarian assistance in an alarming situation

Yemen is entering its fourth year of conflict. Three quarters of the Yemeni population are in a deplorable situation and depend on humanitarian assistance. Food insecurity and a lack of access to safe drinking water and health centres, are the main burdens on an already alarming situation. Country Director Rolland Gueneau bears witness.

Catastrophic figures

The country’s economy is destroyed. Many schools and hospitals are no longer functioning. 7 million people are undernourished, including 2 million children. 400,000 of them suffer from severe acute malnutrition and are at risk of death. In the latest years of the conflict, we estimate 85,000 Yemenis have already died from preventable diseases, including cholera, which has spread like wildfire since April 2017, affecting nearly 1.2 million people.

The needs are far from being met

To address these problems, SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL provides food aid, builds and rehabilitates water points, distributes hygiene equipment and builds latrines. The latter are one of the best weapons available to fight water-related diseases, bloody diarrhoea, or cholera.

Our teams have built hundreds of latrines, but the needs are still huge. Hundreds more are still needed to save lives and reduce the mortality rate.
