Khazan Jadeed: A humanitarian emergency largely overlooked

Published on Friday 29 May 2026

With the opening of a base in Ed Daein, in south-western Sudan, SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL is now able to operate in a severely underserved area stretching from East Darfur to West Kordofan, including parts of North Darfur. Across this region, humanitarian needs are rapidly increasing while response capacities remain critically insufficient.

In Khazan Jadeed, tens of thousands of displaced people who fled ZamZam camp and the city of El Fasher are living in extremely precarious conditions. Since their arrival in April 2025, they have received very limited assistance: no shelter distribution, no food assistance, almost no access to healthcare. Only a few weeks of water trucking, and around ten latrines constructed across the town’s three camps. In a context marked by malnutrition, the risk of cholera, and measles outbreaks, displaced families are surviving with extremely limited resources.

SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL is currently providing emergency water access through water trucking operations. However, due to insufficient funding, this response can only be maintained for a limited period. The planned rehabilitation of a few hand pumps will not be enough to sustainably meet needs, especially as existing water points are privately owned. Without additional funding for long-term infrastructure, particularly borehole drilling, access to water will remain critical.

On May 14, a fire in Al Nakheel camp in eastern Darfur further worsened an already dire situation. Approximately 400 families saw their shelters partially or completely destroyed and lost most of their belongings – destruction caused by the flames themselves and by the interventions of residents attempting to contain them.

  • 51.7 million inhabitants
  • 176th out of 193 countries on the Human Development Index
  • 790,000 people helped

Thanks to the mobilisation of teams from Tawila and Zalengei, SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL  delivered 1,107 emergency kits to support the most vulnerable households, identified by the camp committee and local authorities, notably pregnant or breastfeeding women, female-headed households with children, disabled people, and the elderly. A small team composed of the Director of Operations for Darfur and the Kordofans and the Mobile WASH Supervisor carried out the assessment and coordinated the response.

The distribution was conducted calmly thanks to the support of male and female daily workers from the camp and the involvement of the representative committee. At the same time, the large crowds gathering around the distribution site reflected both the level of distress and the severe lack of assistance available in the area. Even after distributions ended, hundreds of people continued to request support.

While this intervention provided immediate assistance to part of the affected population, it also highlighted the scale of unmet needs. Beyond the households directly impacted by the fire, thousands of other families are already living without adequate shelter, essential household items such as basic cooking utensils, or regular humanitarian assistance. As the rainy season approaches, many do not even have plastic sheeting.

In Khazan Jadeed, humanitarian assistance remains far below the scale of need. SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL continues to respond to the most critical emergencies, but a rapid mobilisation of additional funding and humanitarian actors is urgently needed to prevent further deterioration of the situation.
