Focus: The situation of Burmese refugees in Thailand
Since the beginning of June 2009, renewed fighting between the Myanmar national army and Karen rebels has caused another influx of refugees along the Burmese border, around 40km from the Mae La camp where we are already present.
Thousands of people, most of whom are exhausted women and children who have often had to cross the jungle on foot in torrential rain, have taken refuge in Thailand in fields, in a Buddhist temple and in other empty public buildings and private dwellings.
In response to this new humanitarian crisis, SOLIDARITÉS has travelled to the area to assess the needs of these populations, with a view to taking action in terms of access to water, sanitation and hygiene. |
