Purifying drinking water in Pancevo-Ivanovo
Pancevo is an industrial town, situated 20 km from Belgrade, and is one of the four sites which were the worst hit by the NATO bombings in 1999. Pancevo's population of 98 000 now faces serious public health risks, due to soil pollution following the destruction of the petrochemical complex and fertilizer factories which dispersed large quantities of toxic products (mercury, ammonia, crude oil ...) into the environment.

Our objectives:
To protect public health
To reduce the risks of illnesses linked to impure drinking water
To improve the quality and quantity of drinking water supplied
To improve the population's living conditions

To date, SOLIDARITES has launched and completed 3 connected projects:

rehabilitation of the Pancevo water treatment plant, including replacement of water treatment equipment and verification of their compliance with water treatment standards;

installation of a drinking water supply network at Ivanovo. Connection of this network with the Pancevo network to stop Ivanovo's residents from using wells drawn on the polluted water table;
Extension of the Pancevo water treatment plant's capacity in order to satisfactorily meet the water demand from Ivanovo residents.

Through the rehabilitation of the Pancevo water treatment plant, over 150 000 people now have access to drinking water, and no longer risk contamination from spilled toxic and chemical substances.
