"The image that one has of deepest Africa is indeed reality, it is another universe where life trickles along according to the generosity of nature. In the countryside, the population is really poor: malnutrition is rampant. No shoes, rags for clothes, a shack for a house and working the land as his only occupation, this is the Rwandan's lot.

Our work is very rewarding since we can see the immediate impact which we have on the local population and their sheer joy when the water pours from the fountains. It is inconceivable to compare our consumer society with the vital needs in these countries …

1996-2000 : Providing Drinking Water

Water supply and purification for 5 municipalities in the Kibuye province, benefiting 180,000 people;

Rehabilitation and construction of 22 water conveyance networks;


Fitting out of 190 springs;

Training for local committees to manage the water supply systems and access to drinking water;

Construction of 100 latrines in 14 primary schools benefiting over 3,000 children (1997).




1995-1996: Feeding, Transporting, Assisting, Educating

Feeding
Rehabilitation of 6 nutritional centres in the Kibuye region benefiting 3,000 children in 1995, 1,500 in 1996 as well as 300 breast-feeding mothers. Once the buildings had been renovated, SOLIDARITES brought in teams of Rwandans and provided the logistics for the running and supplies of these centres;
Creation of food shops (sale of food and hygiene products at prices below local market prices);

Supply of poultry, rabbits and vegetable seeds to encourage healthy, diverse and self-sufficient local production.

Transporting
Gikongoro Region, 200 000 beneficiaries

8 trucks carried and distributed thousands of tons of products (seeds, food), shared between 11 camps;
Kibeho (April 95) : evacuation of 200 wounded people and 300 unaccompanied children.

Assisting Refugees

november-december 1996
Transport of 40 tons of rice and 300 tons of firewood to 7 refugee camps for 12,000 people returning from Zaïre.

Nutritional Education
Training of Nutrition Centre staff;
Informing mothers and pregnant women (benefiting 150 breast-feeding women)

Presence of a social worker with the mothers in the villages

Medical supervision of children (monitoring of weight, growth, infections) for 1,300 children aged 0 to 5 years





1994: Emergency Assistance to Displaced Persons

Emergency Relief
benefiting 70 000 people:
Continuous distributions throughout 11 camps for displaced persons of 8,000 tons of emergency goods such as food, plastic sheeting, jerricans by 11 landrovers.
