A slow-motion tsunami…

Exceptional emergency mobilization is required to assist more than 20 million victims of this terrible flooding.

The flooding, which has devastated Pakistan in July and August 2010, and due to torrential monsoon rains, are the worst in the country’s history. It has caused an unprecedented humanitarian disaster, comparable to “a slow-motion tsunami”, in the words of UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon: almost 1,800 dead, 1.25 million homes destroyed, 3.4 million head of livestock drowned and more than 20 million people affected, including 10 million left homeless (sources: United Nations). Additionally, some 3.6 million hectares of farmland have been devastated.

The worst-affected provinces are Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (previously known as the North-West Frontier Province), Punjab province in the centre, and Sindh province in the south.

The key priority for disaster victims is access to drinking water, hygiene and sanitation in order to prevent epidemics.

SOLIDARITES INTERNATIONAL in Pakistan is committed to responding to the essential needs of populations facing acute crisis, building and reinforcing their capacity to sustainably recover from shocks, in particular in the field of water, sanitation and hygiene.
