SOLIDARITES INTERNATIONAL at the emergency crossroads

East Chad is a particularly vulnerable region, caught between the Chadian and Sudanese conflicts. In Chad, the governmental and rebel forces continue to fight for power, a conflict that has destabilized the country for more than 40 years.

Darfur, in Western Sudan, has been rife with violence since 2004. This has only aggravated the already fragile situation in Chad. Because of this, 180,000 Chadians have had to leave their hometowns and villages; 300,000 Sudanese refugees* have fled the conflict and general insecurity in order to settle in this part of the country.

There have been serious consequences from this influx of population: malnutrition, insufficient access to drinking water, outbreaks of water-born illnesses, no sanitation, educational facilities or medical treatment, destruction of cultures….

Finally, near the border with the Central African Republic, in the Haraze/Daha area, almost 20,000 Central African refugees have arrived since February 2009, after fleeing armed conflict in their country. These refugees are now settled in various camps near Chad villages and urgently require access to drinking water and sanitation; most are without shelter or basic provisions.
