Focus on : Slow Sand Filter

An innovative system for providing access to drinking water

In Chad, SOLIDARITÉS set up a simple, inexpensive and innovative system to provide drinking water: the slow sand filter.

The diagram opposite shows how the slow sand filter works. It's a very simple mechanism: a cement container one meter high, filled with layers of sand and gravel.

Each container holds up to 20 liters of water. The sand and grit, as well as the biofilm which forms on the surface of the water, act as a natural filter. Every minute, it filters ONE liter of water. Bacterial organisms are also filtered out, resulting in clean, drinkable water.

The system is very effective and can be installed directly in homes. It can supply a family of five with drinking water at a cost of only 40 euros.
