The focal points of our action in 2006

•  Continuation of our programme to provide access to drinking water and sanitation in Rural Bujumbura, Cankuzo, Muramvya, Mwaro, Bururi and Gitega provinces: rehabilitation of water conveyance pipes in rural areas, equipping water springs, building and emptying latrines.

•  Increasing food security activities (distribution of agricultural fertilizers, support for small-scale breeding activities) in Cankuzo and Muramvya provinces.

Our programmes in 2004-2005

Water, hygiene and sanitation programme
Rural Bujumbura, Muramvya, Mwaro, Bururi and Cankuso.

Objectives
Improve the availability of drinking water and hygiene conditions for the most vulnerable populations in the above provinces :
by supplying drinking water through repairs to water conveyance pipes, or by capturing and equipping water springs
by ensuring the future maintenance of our current water activities, through support for local water boards
by improving hygiene conditions through the construction of latrines and through hygiene awareness campaigns.

Food safety programme

Muramvya-Mwaro, Gitega provinces

Objectives
Provide assistance to severely vulnerable populations and counter food shortages among these populations :
by distributing seeds, fruit trees, animals (pigs, goats) and agricultural tools
by reviving animal breeding activities
by setting up sustainable cropping activities
by diversifying agricultural activities (bee keeping, fish farming, demonstration plots, mills)
by supporting agricultural associations

2003 : Providing food, support and assistance

SOLIDARITES' programmes in Burundi during 2003 seek to maintain and develop the humanitarian action undertaken by our association in the country since 1997. Our programmes continually adapt to meet the ever-changing and variable needs of the local population, and to pave the way for our nutritional programmes to be integrated into the local community infrastructure, whilst maintaining an emergency response where necessary. In this regard, the transfer of our nutritional activities in Muramvya into local hands is in line with this long-term objective.

In 2003, SOLIDARITES' programmes in Burundi focus on two areas :

Nutrition and food safety

 Nutrition (CNS and CNT)
Continuing to take care of moderate malnutrition cases in the 12 Nutritional Supplementation Centres in the Gitega region, as well as taking care of severe malnutrition cases at the 2 Nutritional Therapy Centres (Gitega - Mutaho).

If the nutritional situation continues to improve in 2003, these nutritional programmes will gradually be integrated into the Burundese healthcare infrastructure.

Food safety
These programmes aim to decrease malnutrition among vulnerable populations in Gitega and Muramvya provinces (with particular attention to the Mwaro area). They consist of the following activities :

- Distribution and diversification of seeds
- Revalorization of livestock, breeding : goats and pigs
- Composting activities
- fish farming, bee keeping
- training and follow-up for families and groups

These activities aim to allow the assisted populations to move from a state of dependance to one of self-sufficiency and local development.

Water, hygiene and sanitation

These programmes are being carried ou in seven provinces (Bujumbura rural, Muramvya, Mwaro, Gitega, Bururi, Bubanza and Cibitoke). Their aim is to reduce water-borne diseases among vulnerable populations through five types of activities :

Capturing and equipping springs
Water conveyance pipes fox schools, health centres and camps for displaced persons
Latrines and draining of latrines at camps for displaced persons
Awareness campaigns about water and hygiene for displaced persons and schoolchildren.
Work with the Water Board to ensure that our activities remain sustainable.
