Our humanitarian action following Cyclone Sidr
(2007-2008)
SOLIDARITES
INTERNATIONAL has set up an emergency aid project for the victims
of cyclone Sidr, targeting 156 645 people. The objective of
our mission in Bangladesh is to improve access to drinking water
and hygiene for populations affected by the cyclone.
In Mathbaria, only 6% of the
population has access to running water, and 64% uses rainwater from
open-air ponds. Unfortunately, none of these water ponds was spared
by the cyclone. A large amount of plants and debris fell into these
ponds, causing a high level of pollution contamination. In certain
villages, the number of cases of diarrhoea increased by 85%.
In collaboration with the local NGO Gonoshasthaya Kandra,
SOLIDARITES INTERNATIONAL has set up numerous activites
to improve access to drinking water and sanitation.
Access
to drinking water for 37 710 people:
- Emergency distributions of purification kits using aluminium
sulfate solution, and distribution of hygiene kits (soap, washing
powder, bucket)
- Installation of a water purification plan in the town of Mathbaria,
capable of producing 20m3 of water per day. A water transportation
service was set up in order to supply neighbouring villages.
- Distribution of 50 Canada-Bangladesh BioSand Filters to schools
without access to drinking water and training for teachers in
the maintenance of these filtres.
- Distribution of 3 782 « Chulli »
water purification systems, and 3 782 water jars. This purification
system produces 25 litres of water in one hour.
Awareness
sessions regarding hygiene and water treatment for 50 685 people:
- Hygiene promotion for 5 000 female heads of household,
who will then pass on this information to their families and to
the population. Distribution of a hygiene kit to each of these
women (soap, washing powder, bucket, towels).
- Distribution of materials to enable the reconstruction of 642
family latrines.
Rehabilitation of water ponds for 68 250 people:
- Cleaning and depollution, using lime washing, of 175 public
and private water ponds
- Emptying and rehabilitation of 13 water ponds
- Rehabilitation of 7 community sand filtres enabling water to
be filtred. In parallel, training sessions and awareness messages
were set up in order to maintain these sand filtres in good repair.
