- Distribution programme in Mungo ; Partner
: WFP (United Nations World Food Programme)
This distribution programme, which commenced in November 2002,
was aimed at families with at least one malnourished child. One
food distribution of WFP rations was made per month. 25 trucks
transported the rations from Huambo to Mungo each month, and their
distribution represented a whole week's work, including various
checks to identify beneficiaries and the actual time taken to
distribute the rations. This programme reached around 5,000
families, or around 35,000 people. With former UNITA fighters
returning home, this programme took on a new dimension since each
former soldier and his family received food.

Food safety programme in Mungo and Mussende ; Partner : Coopération
Française
Complementary to the food distribution programme, the food safety
programme commenced following the first emergency distributions.
The prime objective during the first two months after our arrival
in Angola was to first distribute food rations to vulnerable populations
in Mungo before distributing seeds, to avoid these seeds being eaten.
This programme relied mainly upon close collaboration with agricultural
associations working in Mungo. Once seed distributions had been
diversified, more specific work was carried out to set up a programme
covering both the Mungo area (40,000 beneficiaries) and Mussende
area (35,000 beneficiaries). A needs assessment for the Mussende
area led us to open a new operational base. Specific actions are
to follow the food distributions carried out in partnership with
the WFP (revival of animal stocks, assistance for beekeeping, distributions
of seeds and tools), which aim to provide long-term food resources
for the families of farmers, former soldiers, and refugees returning
home. -
Access to water and sanitation programme in Mungo
This ambitious programme, carried out in partnership with OCHA,
resulted in a radical improvement in the living conditions of
60,000 people living in Mungo and the isolated villages of Tchimbula,
Elimbundo, Damasco and Villa Graça : 12 wells were rehabilitated
or built, 4 of which were for schools, 2 springs were fitted out
and 22 hand-pumps were installed; in addition, 22 washing areas
and 14 latrines were built, all for schools. |

| Angola, a former Portuguese colony, has been ravaged by violence
since its independance in 1975. Civil war raged between the MPLA

Dos Santos, and Jonas Savimbi's UNITA movement (National Union for
the Total Independence of Angola). The death of Jonas Savimbi, in
March 2002, and the subsequent signature of a cease-fire on April
5th, finally allowed humantarian organisations to reach abandoned,
inaccessible populations, cut off from all humanitarian aid for
years.
