The independance of South Sudan

A referendum took place in South Sudan from 9 January to 15 January 2011, on whether the region should remain a part of Sudan or become independent. This referendum was one of the consequences of the 2005 Naivasha Agreement between the Khartoum central government and the Sudan People's Liberation Army / Movement (SPLA/M).

On 7 February 2011, the referendum commission published the final results, with 98.83% voting in favour of independence.

The predetermined date for the creation of what will soon be the world’s newest state is July 2011 the 9th.

In the last quarter of 2010, the humanitarian situation in many state capitals and rural population centres was greatly impacted by the sudden influx of over 115,000 organised and spontaneous returnees arriving in the months of November and December.
In addition to significant population displacements and movements, the largest leishmaniasis (Kalazaar) outbreak in 9 years affected over 8,000 people in Jonglei and Upper Nile States and prompting health agencies to set up treatment clinics throughout the region.

SOLIDARITES INTERNATIONAL continues focusing on rural water supply and improvement of local hygiene practices and Emergency Preparedness and Response (EP&R), and also completed the second phase of a two year urban food security project in Juba.

Operations expanded recently into Unity State, with the opening an operational base in rural Mayom County (Mankien) as a platform for EP&R and the beginning of rural water supply programming in northern areas of the State.
