Multi-sector programmes

Improving survival strategies in response to drought in Turkana district

Turkana district is the poorest area in Kenya: 64% of the population live below the poverty line, with an acute malnutrition rate of 21.7%. To meet the enormous needs of this population, SOLIDARITES INTERNATIONAL has set up a multi-sector programme to diversify subsistence methods and to help the population develop their own means of adaptation.

Location: Turkana district, to the west of Lake Turkana, Kerio
Number of aid recipients: 21 500 people

  • Food security:
    - support for fishing communities (300 families): distribution of nets and fishing kits, training in fish drying and preservation techniques;
    - stock breeding remains the central activity for over 60% of this mainly agro-pastoral population. To improve the resistance of the herds (goats, sheep and camels) and prepare them to withstand the dry season: establishment of a treatment programme against internal and external parasites, veterinary training, creation of a veterinary pharmacy;
    - activities to facilitate the sale of part of the herds by farmers to avoid unnecessary losses;
    - distribution of seeds and tools, agricultural training for 600 farmers.

  • Access to drinking water and sanitation:
    In order to improve the quantity and quality of available drinking water, SOLIDARITES INTERNATIONAL is carrying out:
    - hygiene promotion sessions, which are carried out by 2 hygiene officers trained by our teams (21600 direct recipients including 1440 schoolchildren in the Kerio area);
    - support for the installation of 50 family latrines and construction of 7 latrines in 3 schools;
    - creation of water committees, construction of 5 wells fed by the Turkwel river, construction of a water collection system for 4 schools, rehabilitation of 5 existing open wells, rehabilitation of an existing borehole, distribution of 20L jerricans to 900 families, selection and fitting out of 3 springs.

Improving living conditions in the barren areas of the Horn of Africa

Number of aid recipients: 27040
Zone: District of Marsabit (North Horr) and surrounding areas (Huri and Kalacha hills)

This experimental project focuses on the root of the problems afflicting this region: desertification, ethnic conflicts and recurring humanitarian crisis - all resulting from poor resource management, causing serious malnourishment and desperate poverty.

  • Developing agriculture and breeding in the agro-pastoral area of Huri and Kalacha hills:
    Repair of fenced cultivation areas over 22.5 hectares of land, weeding of bush areas, seed and tool distribution, installation of 4 areas for fowl breeding, training in veterinary care, construction of a milk-storage unit, preparation and distribution of equipment for milk pasteurization and cold-storage, education in milk storage and selling.

  • Improving resource management in barren areas:
    - Feed production: Fencing off 10 hectares, distribution of tools, grass planting, training in feed production, storage and selling.
    - Re-forestation: planting 4000 trees, education of management committees in charge of planted areas, installation of 200 low-consumption stoves, education and awareness of improved resource management.

  • Improving access to drinking water and sanitation for rural populations:
    Rehabilitation of 16 wells, and of a water-collection system for 5 schools, construction of 2 underground reservoirs, installation of a wind pump, training in well maintenance, construction of 300 latrines, hygiene awareness campaigns, chlorination and water analysis, distribution of 1000 water filters, distribution of waste-management equipment, distribution of 500 mosquito nets.

Emergency programme

Emergency water distribution for populations affected by the drought

Location: North Kenya, Chalbi district, Forolle, Burgabo, Turbi, Dosa Wachu, Hurri Hills
Number of aid recipients: 21 600 people

Chalbi district is situated in an extremely arid area of North Kenya, which suffers from frequent drought. In order to survive, the population and their animals have always depended on rainwater collection and a few deep boreholes.
This year, rainfall between April and June was only 20% of its normal level, and the population is suffering from severe water stress: the average amount of water available is only 2.5 litres of water per person per day. In response to this emergency situation in pastoral areas, SOLIDARITES INTERNATIONAL is working to ensure that the population has sufficient access to water, until the small rainy season at the end of October.

  • Water trucking:
    Transporting water by tanker (10m3 or 5m3 volume) to supply water to the Forole, Turbi and Hurri Hills areas, to ensure that target communities have access to a minium of 5L of water per person per day.
  • Repairing pumping equipment for the high volume bore-hole at Burgabo:
    Replacement of faulty and worn out generator parts, installation of a new electric control panel, a piezometer (to analyse water quality) and a submersible pump in order to provide the population with continual access to water during the current drought crisis.

Food security

Improving Food Security for vulnerable populations of Shanty towns

Number of aid recipients: 60 364 people
Local: Nairobi, Kibera, Kiambu and Mathare Shanty towns

The Shanty town populations survive on less than one dollar per day; they are the most severely affected by the 2008 food crisis and the increase in basic food prices, especially grains.
Our program focuses on access to food products and survival by increasing the population’s ability to produce food and generate income through the sale of part of this production, as well as promoting a healthy and varied diet among residents.

  • Urban Agriculture for 7000 households:
    Mobilizing the community and creating awareness about sack growing, buying grains, setting up demonstration farms and plant nurseries, distributing seeds and seedlings, following up crop cultivation.

  • Installing poultry production sites for 468 households:

Mobilizing the community and creating awareness, selection of aid recipients, purchasing wire mesh for chicken coops, purchasing chicks, veterinary support and follow up, monitoring of activities.

  • Transforming food products:
    Mobilizing the community and creating awareness, selection of aid recipients, purchasing initial grain stocks, analysis, follow up of production, training in transformation of harvested products for 300 households.

  • Food Distribution:
    Monthly distribution of food kits (which are not complete or sufficient rations, but just to supplement diet) to 5664 households (8kg of corn flour, 1kg of vegetable fat for cooking, 2 kg of beans and 1kg of whole wheat flour)
