SRI
LANKA - SUMATRA
Stopping
water from killing twice
Following the Tsunami which devastated southern Asia on December
26, SOLIDARITES reacted very quickly. On January 5th, two teams
flew to the affected areas : one to Ampara in Sri Lanka with
20 tons of humanitarian equipment, the other to Aceh in Indonesia
(in the north of Sumatra). Their objective : to identify areas
in greatest need and provide immediate aid.
Our volunteers, including several
hydraulics specialists, continuously sought to adapt their action
to meet the most urgent needs.
Our
programmes in Asia are now being run and developed from two
operational bases in Sri Lanka, one in the capital Colombo,
the other in Ampara (east coast), as well as two bases in Sumatra,
one in Medan (north-east coast) and the other in Meulaboh (north-west
coast).
In these areas, SOLIDARITES'
current priority is access to drinking water and sanitation
facilities.
Although the most urgent needs
have now been covered, thanks to the great generosity of donors,
companies, and foundations, the reconstruction of ruined infrastructure,
in particular where water supplies are concerned still requires
a large amount of attention. For example, in the Ampara region
in Sri Lanka, every single one of the 18,000 wells is unusable.
Alternative, sustainable drinking water supply facilities therefore
need to be installed and developed.
