Somalia

Mission open from 2007 to 2017

Context

More than 20 years of civil conflict, and the advent of armed groups taking control of large areas of the country, resulted in the displacement of one million people in Somalia. Already very vulnerable, Somali populations were also facing repeated droughts, including the one caused by the La Niña phenomenon in 2011, which hit 12 million people with an unprecedented food crisis in the Horn of Africa. The crisis caused by the combined effects of drought, inflation and conflict killed thousands of people.

Our action

In 10 years of presence in the country’s most hard-to-reach areas, SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL teams responded to the emergencies and needs of people affected by conflict and drought. With water distributions, construction and rehabilitation of water infrastructure, hygiene promotion, cash transfers and work on livelihoods such as livestock, the teams assisted 1.5 million people in the Jubba, Galmudug, Afmadow and Gedo areas in the south of the country.
