Context

Nigeria is the most populated country in Africa, and represents 47% of the western African population. Since 2009, armed group Boko NigeriaHaram is in rebellion against the Nigerian government and conducts strikes in the country, particularly in the north.

Recently, the conflict went regional with attacks in neighbouring countries (Cameroon, Chad, and Niger), but those who are the most affected by the group’s exactions are populations living in the States of Borno, Adamawa, Yobe and Bauchi in Nigeria.

The security context in Nigeria still tense in the north of the country, particularly in Borno State, even if the Nigerian army has reconquered some territories in the past year.
The presence of Boko Haram in the country caused many population displacements which are now gathering in camps located in neighborhoods of Borno State capital Maiduguri or in surrounding host communities.
Today, the city of Maiduguri is having more and more difficulties welcoming this massive influx.

Today, while Boko Haram is gradually losing ground, States which have been administrated by the group have to be rebuilt to allow people to live there again. It could take a long time.

NigeriaFurthermore, many people will not be able to return to their place of origin and will stay in camps where their needs will have to be addressed. Finally, the return of some displaced people in States taken back by the government could create new issues in terms of needs and security.

On 2nd July 2016, the Nigerian government officially declared a nutritional emergency in Borno State, after an increase in the number of displaced people in the State’s camps.

According to the World Food Programme, 500,000 people (refugees, returnees, IDPs, local communities) are faced with an acute food insecurity crisis. During the lean period, which is coming soon, the numbers are certainly going to increase.

In numbers:
- Population : 178 517 million inhabitants (UN-DATA source)
- Human Development Index (HDI): 152th/188 countries
- 80% of persons living in rural areas live under the poverty rate.
- Life expectancy : 52 years-old
