Nepal

In 2015

Context

On 25 April 2015, an earthquake registering 7.8 on the Richter scale hit Nepal 77km west of Kathmandu.  There were several small aftershocks, followed by a second, 6.7 magnitude quake. 9 million people, living in 30 of the country’s 75 districts, were affected. On 12 May of the same year, a fresh earthquake measuring 7.4 on the Richter scale hit this country where the average person’s annual income does not exceed $340.

Our action

In the immediate aftermath of the disaster, SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL’s emergency team was dispatched to the country, with water, sanitation and hygiene experts, as well as logistics specialists and emergency coordinators.
Working in close collaboration with a medical NGO, SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL’s emergency team helped several thousands of families, by distributing drinking water and kits (hygiene kits, basic need kits…) as well as providing water, sanitation and hygiene aid to mobile clinics already in operation.

In addition to its emergency team, SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL sent in total more than three tonnes of equipment, including water pumps, bladders, water purification tablets and hygiene kits. This equipment helped our teams restore water and sanitation facilities in hospitals and provide valuable assistance to medical staff.
