Myanmar

Addressing the needs of the most vulnerable, from life-saving to life-building
17.6 million people in need
2 million people internally displaced
+ than 1.6 million people new internally displaced since february 2021
178.000 people helped

Context

The complex humanitarian situation in Myanmar has been for the past decades compounded by conflicts, vulnerability towards natural disasters, chronic poverty, underlying structural inequalities and discrimination, primarily on the basis of ethnicity and religion, which exacerbated the needs and vulnerabilities of affected people in many parts of the country.

The 2021 military takeover resulted in an increase of conflict, violence and protection risks, needs and displacements across the country. On top of the protracted crisis in Rakhine and in Kachin that has seen little improvements over the past few years come an estimated 1,6 million new internally displaced people, who fled their villages of origin due to conflicts based on ethnic and/or political grounds. Based on OCHA’s data, the country counts 17,6 million people in need in 2023.

Access to basic services is limited and livelihoods are threatened by conflict and lack of economic opportunities, particularly for the stateless Rohingya in Rakhine and for other Internally Displaced People.

Finally, in a context of climate change, Myanmar remains a country particularly vulnerable to natural disaster as it has been illustrated multiple times in recent history.

Our action

  • Mission
    opened in 2008
  • Budget 8M€

SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL’s first intervention in Myanmar goes back to 2008 as a response to the Nargis cyclone in the Delta region.

Today, SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL Myanmar intervenes primarily in the States of Kachin and Rakhine. We provide the communities impacted by conflicts – displaced persons, returnees and host communities – or by natural disasters with access to water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), food security and livelihoods as well as shelters and non-food items.

In the context of an extended humanitarian crisis, our priority is to provide the most vulnerable populations with emergency assistance and access to basic services, while working with communities and local partners for a longer-term solution.

Thanks to our expertise, positioning and network of partners, we have been able since 2020 to provide a response to the COVID-19 pandemic, to natural disasters affecting the country and to the emerging needs arising from conflict.
