Philippines

From 2013 to 2015

Context

The country third most at risk of natural disasters was hit by super typhoon Haiyan in November 2013, which devastated the province of Leyte and the town of Tacloban.  It is considered to have been the most powerful storm ever recorded on Earth, claiming 6,000 lives and leaving over 4 million without shelter in an area already devastated by extreme poverty. 2014 was also blighted by a series of natural disasters placing the Philippines ninth in terms of countries the most exposed to the consequences of climate change.

Our action

Our teams provided emergency assistance to the victims of Typhoon Haiyan in Tacloban, by distributing shelter, emergency, survival and hygiene kits, rehabilitating water treatment systems, and setting up temporary sanitation facilities.

Next our teams focused on recovery activities: offering cash transfers to respond to essential needs (Cash for Work initiatives to clear fields and prepare them for agricultural production to resume), and encouraging activities that ensure alternative livelihoods (starting a business, livestock farming).

Our teams also worked alongside populations affected by Typhoon Hagupit on Daram Island in Western Samar. They launched a programme focused on meeting recovery and essential needs in terms of both livelihoods and water, sanitation and hygiene, for the most severely affected populations.
